In 2012, former Muscogee Lodge Chief and Vigil Honor member David Goza led an effort to produce “The Definitive Muscogee Lodge #221 Insignia Guide. This work built on and added significantly to the Muscogee memorabilia listing from the 1987 publication, “A History of Scouting in Central South Carolina (with Insignia).” Most of the images (2012 and earlier) and much of the information in this section, and other Muscogee memorabilia sections, comes from David Goza’s aforementioned guidebook. This webpage is an attempt to add to these works in a media that is free to access and easy to maintain.

Images are listed in chronological order based on best known information* of issuance dates.

*The most probable irregularity in the chronological listing is the first four “S” (solid) issues — S1, S2, S3, and S4. They are listed below in the generally accepted order of issuance, with the S1 (vertical stitch spread W) being the first solid embroidered flap. However, there is considerable anecdotal and photographic evidence that suggests that this ordering is not correct. Some believe that the correct order is S3, S4, S1, S2, with the S3 being produced circa 1960. Compounding the confusion is evidence that the lodge may have gone back and forth between issues. For example, Ordeal members in 1969 received the S2, but in 1970, members received the S3, yet there are photographs from 1962 of Arrowmen with S3 (or S4) flaps on their uniform. The S1 flap is unquestionably the most scarce of the first four solid issues, but it may not be the first.

YS1Year: early 1970's

Dimensions: 117x53mm

Notes: This flap is NOT an official Muscogee Lodge issue, but nonetheless an interesting item. Former Lodge Chief John Coleman (1970) hand painted several yellow border S5 flaps (a few had the border removed and had stitched with silver thread) to create a "Vigil flap." These were given out to Vigil members at a Vigil breakfast. This set the precedent for silver border being used for future Vigil flaps F6 and S9.

Dimensions: 115x52mm
